Types of Shotguns
Shotguns feature a distinctive long barrel with a smooth bore and are available in a range of styles, set ups and gauges. These can be broken down into three main categories:
● Break Action - Suited to both beginners and experienced shooters, these single or double barrelled shotguns offer a simple and extremely reliable design ideal for hunting and sport shooting.
● Pump Action - Most popular with beginners due to their lightweight design, these shotguns are a classic, known for their reliability and straightforward mechanics.
● Semiautomatic - Suited to moderate to experienced shooters, these firearms offer rapid firing capabilities with reduced recoil, but tend to be costlier due to their complex mechanics.
The bolt action shotgun is less common these days, which feature a more traditional design where the shooter twists a bolt handle up and then pulls it back. Straight pull shotguns differ from a bolt action shotgun by requiring a linear motion to chamber and extract a cartridge from the firearm. A tactical shotgun is another less common style used primarily by militaries and law enforcement.
Choosing the Right Shotgun
The right shotgun for you often comes down to personal preference over style and design. Double barrel shotguns are available in either over-under or side-by-side styles. Both are commonly used for clay target shooting, vermin control and game shooting. Single barrels, meanwhile, are used for trap shooting and hunting.
Shotgun gauges have an inverse relationship with ammo size. 10, 12, and 16 gauges are ideal for hunting various game whereas 20, 28, and .410 gauges are better for smaller game. 12 and 20 gauge shotguns are most popular. A 12 gauge is ideal for hunting deer whereas a 20 gauge works great for game birds. Speak to our team in-store for more specific advice on your needs.
